News New Signal Interface Unit from North Atlantic New SIU 6 is ideal for Remote Data Acquisition and Distribution in hostile environments
North Atlantic Industries has announced the release of the Sensor Interface Unit, SIU 6 – a rugged, compact, embedded I/O system for remote data processing, acquisition and distribution for platform monitoring and control system applications.
This high functional density, base-plate cooled system features COTS Multifunction I/O Boards with integrated rugged Power Supply. The rugged chassis is designed to operate in harsh environments such as extreme temperature, EMI, shock and vibration. An integrated connector to backplane architecture eliminates the need for custom wiring. Two 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet ports and up to 300 I/O signals are supported.
Taking advantage of NAI’s high density Multifunction I/O products, the SIU6 allows for a wide selection of I/O and communications functions such as A/D, D/A, TTL, RTD, Discrete I/O, Synchro/ Resolver to Digital and LVDT, Digital to Synchro/ resolver and DLV, MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429 and CANBus. A Freescale PowerPC or Analog Devices Low Power Blackfin processor module option allows for processing of raw I/O function data. VxWorks 6.x BSP or Analog Devices Tool Kit is supported.
“The SIU6 is the most compact rugged chassis touting optional processing and 300 I/O signals,” says Lino Massafra, V.P. of Sales and Marketing. “Centralised locations for I/O data processing, acquisition and distribution that can be shared over Ethernet, MIL-STD-1553, CANBus, Serial or ARINC429 buses requires less wiring, which reduces EMI/ EMC susceptibility and size, weight and power, increasing system reliability.”
The SIU6 is ideally suited for rugged Military and Aerospace applications, such as engine monitoring, weapons targeting, guidance, navigation and command and control.”

The SIU6 is a packaged, turn-key Embedded I/O System for data acquisition and distribution applications. It features a compact, conduction cooled enclosure, 6U VME high density multifunction I/O Boards, integrated Power Supply and Ethernet/Network-centric communications.
The SIU leverages NAI’s mix-and-match multifunction boards. This allows users to populate each board with function specific modules. This unique modular architecture allows selection of up to 12 different or same function modules from a broad assortment of signal interface modules such as I/O, Synchro/Resolver-to-Digital and LVDT, and serial communication modules such as RS232/422/485, MIL-STD-1553, CANBus and ARINC429.
This approach increases packaging density, saves enclosure slots, reduces power consumption and adds continuous background BIT testing. Automatic background BIT testing, an important feature, is always enabled and continually checks the health of each channel. A fault is immediately reported and the specific channel is identified. Additional processing support can be incorporated via the use of a Blackfin™ BF-533 DSP processor module taking advantage of Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) Visual DSP++ Development Environment. This allows processing of the raw data available from the I/O functions. This capability can provide significant benefits including:
- Formatting and packetizing data for immediate use by the system processor
- Use of other serial I/O protocols instead of Ethernet, if required.
- Allow functions to be applied to individual data channels. A typical example would be an average of data over a specified time.
- Allow functions to be applied to multiple data channels. For example allow a discrete channel activation to cause the reporting of the current state of other I/O channels.

 |
- Low profile allows for easy mounting near I/O sources.
- Less system wiring required, which results in lower weight and space, reduced EMI/EMC susceptibility, and lower maintenance.
- Modular architecture allows user to mix-and-match I/O and communication functions.
- Automatic background BIT testing continually checks and reports the health of each channel.
- Data available to all systems via centralized Ethernet switch.
- Optional local processing capability.
- Extensive diagnostics.
- Software Support Kit and Drivers are available
